The New Midwest

In February 2017, Belt Publishing published my book The New Midwest: A Guide to Contemporary Fiction of the Great Lakes, Great Lakes, and Rust Belt. My goal is to help move the conversation about Midwestern literature beyond writers of generations past, and beyond cliches of generations past. The region has a different, more complicated relationship to religion, race, family, immigration, and many other issues than it did in Hemingway’s day. (Or even Bellow’s day.) Here’s an excerpt from the introduction.

The book received more positive, high-profile press than the author of a modest book of literary criticism has any right to expect. You can read a summary of some of that coverage here.

Check out the Facebook page for updates on readings, events, and other news about the book.
